Should it have come with a SIM card?

Hi all. I ordered and received the OVMS module with cellular data. I thought it came with a SIM card but there was none in the box (I'm in the uk). Am I missing a SIM card or do I need to use my own? Not a huge deal but just thought I'd check.

If you purchased from the UK

If you purchased from the UK distributor, it should come with a SIM card pre-installed inside the module. Power it up, and go to the web interface, power on the modem, and you should see the ICCID from the SIM card shown.

The modules from Fasttech in China do not have SIM cards, due to chinese import/export restrictions.

The SIM card, if included, is normally already installed into the module.

Kits ordered from Fasttech currently don't come with a SIM card. Kits from UK & US distributors do include one.

Ah. Right. That's my mistake

Ah. Right. That's my mistake then! Yes I ordered it from the UK distributor via the OVMS website. But I just opened it and took a quick look last night when I got home from work (tired and stupid). Thought the slot on the front was a SIM card slot! D'oh! Thanks all.

I ordered mine from https:/

I ordered mine from https://www.medlockandsons.com/product/ovms and tried to go through the setup and install today only to discover it didn't come with a SIM

I checked the website https:/

I checked the website https://www.medlockandsons.com/product/ovms . They do not advertise in the written text that a simcard would be shipped with the kit. BUT on the second picture of the product on their website there is a simcard visible inside the slot. From the legal point of view, you can write to them, that they have not delivered the product as advertised on the picture. At best take yourself a picture of what you got delivered and place it in the same way they did on the second picture. Then make a red circle with GIMP on the picture and ask them when they would deliver the missing part you circled on the picture.

Its bad for customers when they do not get that delivered what is been shown on the pictures. Its simply not fair to let them expect something and get something else delivered. The supplier should not be lazy to update the picture when the thing he is selling changes.

If you use your shipment return and refund rights instead of buying yourself a simcard, then you can currently buy from this seller with simcard: https://shop.openenergymonitor.com/open-vehicle-monitoring-system-ovms-wifi-4g-sim-ant-included/

Since 2020, Hologram SIM

Since 2020, Hologram SIM cards have not been included in shipments from Fasttech (China).

Since November 2023, Hologram USA stopped shipping SIM cards to Hong Kong or to our manufacturing, so we have not been able to include the SIM cards since that date. Whilst we still support and recommend their SIM cards, we should point out that Hologram's handling of this has been thoroughly unprofessional. Despite ~10 years of history, they refuse to answer correspondence, or provide a reason. We can only guess that it is due to geopolitical tensions, or USA export restrictions.

On 28th November 2023, the installation user guide was changed to remove the comment that the Hologram SIM is included.

Both Open Energy Monitor and Medlock are trying to assist - so best to contact them directly. Alternatively, Hologram still say on their website that they provide free SIM cards for new sign-ups.
