Xfinity Wifi hotspots not appearing in available networks with OVMS---why?

I frequently use Xfinity Wifi hotspots when away from home---either with my laptop or mobile phone.  I'd like for my car's OVMS to be able to similarly login and use that Wifi connection when I park near one (Which is often).  Yesterday I parked in the vicinity of one of these hotspots and was able to see the Xfinity network and login with both my laptop and my mobile phone.  And yet, when trying to add a Wifi network via the OVMS App, the list of visible networks did not include Xfinity's network.  Is this normal?  Am I doing something wrong?  It can't be due to using a Hologram SIM card, can it?

Thoughts?

This was discussed on

This was discussed on facebook recently. Two issues:

  1. If you can't see the SSID broadcast, then either it is out of range or 2.4GHz wifi not supported by the hotspot.
  2. Even if you can make a wifi connection, the Xfinity system requires user+password authentication via web browser. Small embedded devices such as OVMS don't have web browsers, and even if they did that authentication cannot be automated.
